Why did Tim Pawlenty turn into Mr. Softie in regards to Mitt Romney?

Before the debate, Tim criticized Mitt Romney for romneycare and had the perfect opportunity to explain himself at debate but he went soft. Why? Is this mistake gonna hurt him in the long run now.
