Every time i use the trashcan, the smell lingers on longer than i'd like to?

Is this supposed to normal for a trashcan? I live in a studio apartment, however. Can I spray febreeze inside the trashcan or something? what can i do differently to prevent the smell from lingering a long time. yes I do close the lid all the way immediately after putting something in it.
